[07-30-26] Aurora Pedestrian Killed in Powhaton Road Crash That Snarled Traffic Near Jewell

A pedestrian was killed Monday in a crash along the 1600 block of Powhaton Road near E. Jewell Avenue in Aurora, a collision that left drivers stuck in heavy traffic as first responders worked the scene, officials said.

Aurora Police and Aurora Fire crews responded to the area and shut down portions of the roadway while they investigated. Motorists in the corridor were told to expect significant delays as the scene was secured.

According to a social media update from the City of Aurora, CO, Aurora Police Department teams and Aurora Fire Department units were on site at a fatal crash on Powhaton and urged drivers to use alternate routes while investigators worked in the 1600 block.

Where it happened

East Jewell Avenue east of Powhaton is a semi‑rural stretch that has long drawn attention for spotty maintenance and, in some areas, an unpaved surface. Denver7 has reported on the corridor’s rough condition and noted that upgrades are often tied to future development rather than immediate city paving projects.

That combination of lower traffic volumes and uneven surfaces has been cited by local reporting as a recurring concern for people using the area by car or on foot.

Investigation and precedent

Aurora’s Traffic Investigations Unit typically handles fatal vehicle‑pedestrian crashes and can pursue charges following a detailed probe, according to City of Aurora APD News. In previous cases, the department has issued summonses or sought charges once the investigation wrapped up and has encouraged witnesses to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers while detectives gathered evidence.

We will update this story when Aurora Police release additional information about the crash, including any details about the victim or potential charges.

DENVER PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Pedestrian crashes remain a serious safety problem across the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,080 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. More than 71,000 pedestrians were also injured.

The problem is significant in Colorado as well. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 120 pedestrians were killed on Colorado roads in 2024. Denver recorded 18 pedestrian fatalities that year, the second-highest total among Colorado counties.

Visibility is an important factor in many pedestrian crashes. CDOT reports that 78 pedestrian fatalities in Colorado occurred when it was dark in 2024, representing 65% of all pedestrian deaths that year.

The longer-term trend also remains concerning. In 2025, the state of Colorado recorded 127 pedestrian fatalities. Between 2020 and 2025, Denver County alone recorded 140 pedestrian deaths, more than any other state county during that period.

Pedestrians have little physical protection when struck by a motor vehicle. Even a collision at a relatively low speed can cause traumatic brain injuries, fractures, spinal injuries, internal injuries, or other life-changing harm.

Common factors that can contribute to pedestrian crashes include:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Impaired driving
  • Failure to yield
  • Unsafe turns
  • Poor visibility
  • Failure to obey traffic signals
  • Drivers failing to watch for pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks

If you or someone you love has been injured while walking, a Denver pedestrian accident attorney can investigate what happened and help determine who may be responsible.
