[09-20-26] Smith Road Shut Down After Pedestrian Seriously Hurt at Notorious Quebec Crossing

A pedestrian suffered serious injuries Thursday after being struck by a motorist at the intersection of Smith Road and Quebec Street in northeast Denver, prompting police to shut down the eastbound lanes of Smith Road while investigators worked the scene. Denver police publicly reported the crash and lane closure.

The Denver Police Dept. announced the investigation Thursday afternoon, confirming that a motorist and a pedestrian were involved and that the crash resulted in serious injuries. Police said eastbound Smith Road lanes are closed in the area while the department’s crash team works the scene, though the department has not released details on how long the closure will last.

This is not the first time this exact stretch of northeast Denver has made headlines for tragedy. The intersection sits along an active RTD A Line rail corridor, and in May, a 50-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by an A Line commuter train at the Quebec Street crossing near Smith Road, according to 9NEWS. That followed a January 2025 incident in which an A Line train struck and killed a pedestrian near Smith Road and Quebec Street around 4 p.m., an event that shut down rail service and forced bus shuttle detours, as reported by CBS News Colorado.

A Corner With a Documented History of Crashes

The danger at this intersection isn’t new or anecdotal. A February 2022 Denver Vision Zero Road Safety Audit found that Quebec Street carries a posted speed limit of 40 mph while Smith Road is posted at 35 mph, according to the City and County of Denver. The audit also examined the intersection.

Part of a Citywide Surge in Pedestrian Deaths

Thursday’s crash lands amid what city data show is the deadliest period for Denver roadways on record. Denver recorded 93 traffic fatalities in 2025, the highest single-year toll since the city began tracking such data in 2013, according to Axios Denver. Pedestrians have borne a disproportionate share of that increase: pedestrian fatalities in Denver rose 35 percent year-over-year in 2025, reaching 35 deaths, per Colorado Politics.

The trend extends beyond city limits. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported 127 pedestrian fatalities statewide in 2025, with pedestrian deaths rising about 98 percent across the state over a decade, and Denver County leading Colorado with 140 pedestrian deaths recorded between 2020 and 2025. Denver Streets Partnership has also discussed traffic safety in the city.

Across the wider metro region, traffic fatalities climbed more than 30 percent between 2020 and 2024, resulting in at least 1,564 deaths and more than 9,500 serious injuries, according to the Denver Regional Council of Governments. It remains unknown whether the pedestrian struck Thursday was crossing in a marked crosswalk, and Denver police have not released information on driver speed or possible impairment. The Traffic Investigations Unit’s reconstruction of the crash, and any resulting citations or charges, had not been completed as of Thursday evening.
