[10-29-26] One Person Taken to Hospital After Serious I-25 Crash Snarls Denver Traffic

One person was transported to the hospital Tuesday after a serious-injury crash near northbound Interstate 25 and Broadway in Denver, with the driver involved remaining at the scene as police investigated the crash. Officers warned commuters to brace for delays and seek alternate routes while the investigation played out.

The Denver Police Department said in a crash alert that it was investigating a traffic crash with serious injury involving a motorcyclist and a motorist in the area, according to the Denver Police Dept. One person was transported to the hospital, and the driver stayed on scene, per the same post. Police advised the public to expect delays in the area and recommended alternate routes while the crash was cleared.

The department also directs the public to Denver’s Open Data Catalog for broader crash data.

Conflicting Accounts of Where the Crash Happened

Exactly where the crash unfolded remains unclear, with different outlets describing different locations. KDVR reported that the Denver Police Department was investigating a two-motorist crash in the area of northbound I-25 and 8th Avenue, rather than Broadway, and said multiple lanes of the highway were closed. Separately, Citizen reported the incident at Broadway and Larimer Street, a location that differs from both the department’s Broadway/I-25 description and KDVR’s 8th Avenue account. It is not established whether these reports describe the same crash as the department’s Tuesday alert.

A Tuesday morning crash on northbound I-25 backed up traffic to Colorado Boulevard, with Google reporting a 13-minute delay at 7 a.m., the station reported.

A Stretch of Highway With a Troubled History

This is not the first serious motorcycle crash Denver police have investigated along I-25 in recent memory. In July 2025, an unknown driver made an unsafe lane change in front of a motorcycle on northbound I-25 beneath the Interstate 70 overpass, seriously injuring the motorcyclist before the other driver fled the scene, according to The Denver Post. Police were still searching for that hit-and-run driver as of July 30, 2025, the newspaper reported.

Denver police have also investigated a fatal single-vehicle motorcycle crash on I-25 near the Park Avenue exit ramp, in which the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Denver7. That crash blocked the HOV lane for a period of time, and its cause and contributing factors remained under investigation, the station reported. There is no evidence tying either of these earlier incidents to Tuesday’s crash near Broadway.

Colorado Transportation Safety

The Colorado Department of Transportation has said transportation safety is a top priority statewide and has built crash-data dashboards to examine the numbers, causes, types and locations of crashes in order to develop countermeasures, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Details on the condition of the person hospitalized Tuesday, the identity of those involved, and the precise cause of the crash have not been released. Denver police have not said when the roadway fully reopened or whether any citations were issued.

DENVER MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle crashes are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents because riders have little protection when a collision occurs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. Motorcyclists accounted for 16% of all traffic fatalities that year.

The risks are especially significant in Colorado. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, 165 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roads in 2024, the highest number ever recorded in the state. Motorcycle fatalities accounted for nearly one-quarter of all Colorado traffic deaths, even though motorcycles represented only about 3% of registered vehicles.

Colorado also recorded 774 serious bodily injury crashes involving motorcycles in 2024. Of the motorcyclists killed that year, 44% were not wearing a helmet.

Motorcycle deaths declined in 2025, when Colorado recorded 148 fatalities. Even with that decrease, motorcycle crashes remain a significant safety concern across the state.

Denver riders face many of the same risks as motorcyclists throughout Colorado, particularly on busy urban roads and highways. Common factors that can contribute to motorcycle crashes include:

  • Speeding
  • Impaired driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Failure to yield
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Drivers failing to see a motorcycle
  • Dangerous road or weather conditions
  • Inexperienced or unsafe riding

Colorado also allows limited motorcycle lane filtering under a law that took effect in 2024. Motorcyclists may pass between vehicles under certain conditions when surrounding traffic is stopped. Lane splitting between moving vehicles remains illegal.

If you or someone you love has been injured in a motorcycle crash, a Denver motorcycle accident lawyer can investigate what happened and help determine who may be responsible.
